A new Clinical Practice Guideline on Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis in Critically Ill Adults has been published.
A new contextualized clinical practice guideline jointly developed by the Saudi Critical Care Society (SCCS) and the Scandinavian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (SSAI), and endorsed by the Kuwait Anesthesia and Critical Care Society, has now been published.
This guideline provides evidence-informed, regionally adapted recommendations for the use of stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) in critically ill adults. Using the GRADE-ADOLOPMENT methodology, the panel translated global evidence into practical recommendations tailored to the healthcare systems, patient populations, and resource contexts of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Nordic countries.
The guideline highlights:
-
Risk-stratified use of SUP in critically ill adults
-
Integration of enteral feeding status into decision-making
-
Practical guidance on agent selection, dosing, and routes of administration
-
Explicit recommendations on SUP deprescribing and ICU-to-ward transitions
-
A transparent example of international guideline collaboration across distinct health systems
This work represents a model for cross-regional guideline development, demonstrating how collaboration between professional societies can enhance implementation, equity, and real-world applicability of evidence-based recommendations.
